If Necessity is the mother of invention, who is the father?

In the case of Eat In Manta, it was hunger.
I arrived in Manta, Ecuador on August 18th, 2017. Ambar was in Esmeraldas on government business and I was going to be alone until the following day. My Spanish was nonexistent. It was late at night. I was in a luxury ocean front condo atop a 5 star hotel.

Hunger set in long before I stepped foot inside the condo. Being above a hotel, room service seemed like a safe bet. Unfortunately, there wasn’t a menu in sight. There was a magnet for Papa John’s on the refrigerator, however. Instead of going with either of those options, I decided to do a quick google search for online ordering. Clearly, I hadn’t yet become accustomed to my new surroundings. I actually came across a website that seemed to be exactly what I needed but, to my dismay, it did not function. TripAdvisor had too many options to choose from and frankly, I was specifically looking for online ordering from something more locally based.

Long story short, I ended up ordering the most basic dish off the menu from the hotel restaurant because it was my only viable option. I didn’t like having only the one option.

Fast forward to the next night when Ambar was with me. We decided to order food because we hadn’t gone shopping and we were both too jet-lagged to cook. I left her with the responsibility of calling the order in and this, my friends, is where I saw a wide open, gaping hole that needed to be filled IMMEDIATELY. She called a taxi driver, told the taxi driver what restaurant she wanted to order from, and then gave him her order. She had no menu so she ordered whatever was basic enough for everyone to remember. I was in the classic ‘beggars can’t be choosers’ seat and so I just smiled and went along for the ride, observing the logistics and the problem that to me seemed like such a simple thing to solve.

It was on that fateful night in the middle of August, 2017 when the concept for Eat In Manta was born. It is not a new concept, by any stretch of the imagination. It is certainly not a new concept to me. But here, in Manta -- it was new. Here, in Manta, it would not only solve a glaring problem, but it would allow me to put years of experience with traditional U.S. restaurant marketing to good use.
